March 29th Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary

Today for school we learned about The Flood.
I am really enjoying the Weaver curriculum for many reasons, but high on my list is because every lesson is Bible based.
In learning about the flood we learned that there are three major types of rocks.  To help us remember what we learned, we got out the play dough and made small vignettes of how each kind is formed.
Igneous by fire or action of fire, and the dough turned into a volcano and a lava flow.
Sedimentary by water, the dough was transformed into a river complete with beaver dams.
And Metamorphic, caused by pressure or chemical changes. Since the cause of that formation was difficult to express we made marble-y patterns in dough.
After we had the play dough cleaned up we decided we were having too much fun to stop school with just one project so we made flood jars.  It was so fun!
First you fill jars with dirt, rocks, and grass. Then you read the Biblical account of the flood. Adding water when the heavenly flood gates were opened, and shaking the bee-jeebers out of the jars when the ground shook and opened up.    The kids had a blast making these and I know this morning's study will stick with them!  The only trouble we had was in letting them sit long enough to settle. ;-)
